Armstrong Original Curricula

Rock the Sandbox
Ages: 6 weeks – 5 years
Mr. Walter had a “rough day at the sandbox”… Let’s sing and play rhythm instruments with him and learn all of his original tunes from his latest CD, mixed with some family favorites and Rock and Roll songs. Classes will meet once a week for a 45 minute class and kids and grown-ups explore instruments, dance and sing together.

Woody Guthrie’s 20 Grow Big Songs
Ages: 6 weeks – 5 years
This special summer session will focus on Woody Guthrie’s, 20 Grow Big Songs. Woody Guthrie is known for his song, “This Land is Your Land”, but he also wrote a significant amount of music for children. We will sing songs about waking up, washing up, cleaning up, riding in the car (“Riding in my Car”), doing a jig, exploring our fingers and toes (“Put Your Finger in the Air”)…all while learning the music of one of our country’s most influential folk musicians. Join us as we sing, dance, and play along with the music of Woody Guthrie.

I Hear the World Singing
Ages: 6 weeks – 5 years
This six week session features folk songs from around the world. Exposure to different languages at an early age, especially in a fun musical form can encourage children to imitate those sounds unfamiliar to them, thus giving them advantages in speech development, pronunciation and later acquisition of various languages. A parent or caregiver must accompany each child to class.

Rock All Ages
Ages: 6 weeks – 5 years
Join us and jam to your rock and roll favorites! Our brand new song collection, recorded by local musicians and ACMS faculty, features classic tunes with a family twist. From “We Got the Beat” to “Hound Dog,” you will be singing, dancing, and rocking long after class is over! A parent or caregiver must accompany each child to class.

Little Drummers, Big Voices: Peter and the Wolf
Ages: 3 – 5 years
If your child has completed the parent-child curriculum, they may be ready for a class on their own. Or perhaps you are looking for a way to prepare your preschooler for a lifelong love of music while their “window of opportunity” for lifetime musical aptitude is still open. During this special summer session, children will learn the tale of “Peter and the Wolf,” a piece by Prokofiev which uses a narrator and an orchestra to tell the adventure of a young boy and his animal friends in the forest. As each character is introduced, children will learn to identify musical themes and associate those characters with particular orchestral instruments.

Little Drummers, Big Voices: Woody Guthrie’s 20 Grow Big Songs
Ages: 3 – 5 years
This summer session will focus on Woody Guthrie’s, 20 Grow Big Songs. Woody Guthrie is known for his song, “This Land is Your Land”, but he also wrote a significant amount of music for children. Little Drummers, Big Voices: Carnival of the Animals
Ages: 3 – 5 years
This summer we’ll be listening to Carnival of the Animal by Saint-Saëns. Elephants and donkeys and kangaroos, oh my! Children will learn about the instruments of the orchestra while exploring Saint-Saëns’ depictions of these animals and many more. They will be encouraged to use and develop their singing voices and explore expression in music through instrument play and large motor movements.

Little Drummers, Big Voices: Rock All Ages
Ages: 3 – 5 years
If your child has completed the parent-child curriculum, they may be ready for a class on their own! In this session, we will be exploring the world of Rock and Roll music with our brand new Rock All Ages collection, featuring local Austin musicians and ACMS faculty. These 45-minute classes expose children to the instruments found in a rock band and basic music terminology through fun and developmentally appropriate activities. They will be encouraged to use and develop their singing voices and explore expression in music through instrument play and large motor movements. They will also begin to develop a musical vocabulary that can be used to describe any music they hear.
