Group Piano has come to Armstrong Community Music School with Music for Little Mozarts. Students join the adventures of Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse as they learn about music and the piano. Music for Little Mozarts helps students develop singing and music listening skills, and at the same time, provides a bridge between the discipline necessary for playing the piano and the fun of making music. Students will enjoy musical games and group activities as well as some individual time at the piano.
This series was written to provide appropriate piano instruction for 4, 5, and 6 year olds. It integrates age-appropriate instruction with musicianship activities that promote overall development. Though a large portion of class is spent at the piano, students do move from activity to activity in order to accommodate their attention span at these ages.
What are classes like?
A typical class will start with the Hello Song and end with the Goodbye song. (These are different Hello and Goodbye songs from the Early Childhood music classes.) During the 30 minutes of class, students spend time at the piano individually and are assisted by the teacher on their review pieces and their new pieces. We have flashcard time on the floor to study music terms and concepts, and workbook time at the table to further study the topic for the week. We also have a section of class every few weeks that is devoted to Music History and Music Listening. Practice during the week will consist of learning new pieces, listening to the Discovery book CD, and completing the Workbook assignment.
How are the sessions structured?
At Armstrong, we offer two full 18-week Music for Little Mozarts sessions per year. These sessions run from September to January, and February to very early June. Students may sign up for Book 1, and then once they graduate out of Book 1, proceed to Book 2, Book 3, Book 4, etc.
If a parent is not sure if their child is ready for, or would enjoy studying piano, we offer several 3 week long Introductory classes. Those typically occur in November, April, and July and give parents and teachers ample information about whether or not the program is suitable for the student at that time.
Introductory classes and Regular Session classes both meet once a week for 30 minutes. Classes have 2 to 3 students in order to provide optimal attention from the teachers. Parents are not in the class with the students, but MLM teachers strive to keep the parents well-informed of their child’s progress and make themselves available for conversations when needed via phone or email.
