Music Together® is a series of mixed-age classes featuring music, playful movement activities, and instrumental jam sessions for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The class offers a research-based, developmentally appropriate music curriculum with emphasis on adult involvement and entire families enjoying and making music together. A parent or caregiver must accompany each child to class.
Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning. By emphasizing actual music experiences rather than concepts about music, Music Together introduces children to the pleasures of making music instead of passively receiving it from CDs or TV.
Central to the Music Together approach is that young children learn best from the powerful role model of parents/caregivers who are actively making music. The program brings families together by providing a rich musical environment in the classroom and by facilitating family participation in spontaneous musical activity at home within the context of daily life.
Music Together is committed to helping families, caregivers, and early childhood professionals rediscover the pleasure and educational value of informal music experiences. All our teachers have successfully completed Music Together’s training program. Music Together applies the latest research in early childhood music development to the program. A curriculum pioneer since 1987.
New Music Together Online Format for Summer 1
In order to accomodate concerns regarding COVID-19, we are switching to an online format via Facebook and Zoom. As suggested by Music Together®, Facebook Live classes will be posted as 15-minute segments and Zoom interactive classes will be 30 minutes to accommodate children’s shorter attention spans. 2 or 3 segments will occur per a day and will remain online for a week. The teacher will be recorded during Zoom classes and that video will be posted the next day.
In order to view this content, you will need to be registered in our Music Together Online class. After that, you’ll receive an email with an invitation to a special Facebook group and receive access to a special page on our website. Once you accept the Facebook invite, you’ll be able to peruse the sing-along videos and be able to participate in Facebook Live streams. The page on our website has access information for the Zoom classes as well as a link back to the Facebook group.
Please remember that while our sing-along videos are OK for kids to re-watch by themselves, their purpose is to create a shared experience between them and an adult in the home. The real-life involvement and guidance of YOU, the grown-up (or perhaps even a teenage sibling), is what will make the experience truly meaningful for your child. For those of you concerned about too much screen time for your child, rest assured that NOT ALL SCREEN TIME IS THE SAME. While passive consumption of media has been shown to be detrimental to young minds, what we are creating here is different. We CAN make video work for us in positive ways when it facilitates human connection and creative interaction.
