Sanitized instrument kits will be provided to each family. Instrument kits to take home will be available for purchase ($15) and will include an ACMS tote bag while supplies last. In case of inclement weather, class cancelation will be announced on our website and social media.

This also means that we will not be offering our Little Drummers, Big Voices curriculum for the first Summer session. Thank you for your continued support and grace during this time.)
Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and continued engagement with music. We are looking forward to slowly and safely reopening our business for private instruction. As we have discussed how best to do this, it was of the utmost importance to us that we be able to provide you and our faculty with options to ensure everyone is comfortable and safe. To that end, we will continue making remote lessons through ZOOM an option for you if you so choose. Here are our guidelines for the near future:
Why no voice lessons in the building? In short, because studies are showing that singing is one of the most effective ways to spread the virus and we want to keep you and our customers as safe as possible. Last May several of the nation’s leading singing and choral organizations put together an expert panel to discuss what singing will look like for the time being. You can read an article summarizing the conversation by visiting this link.

There is power in community, power in music. Right now the word community is being redefined as many move work environments to homes, schools temporarily close, and we avoid social gatherings. Connections to community are vital, especially in times such as these where every day brings new changes in how we interact with one another. As quarantined residents in Italy recently showed, these changes and challenges can also offer opportunities to reach out to one another through music to celebrate our humanity and create joyful moments.
While we are in this period of transition, please be assured that Armstrong Community Music School is committed to its mission to provide music to all members of our community. By offering remote lessons and singalongs, ACMS will provide the high-quality music educations students and families have come to expect, while also offering financial stability to our teaching artists.
To that end, although we will not be open for regular hours until April 6, we will be leading free community singalongs Tuesdays - Fridays at 3 pm through 4/3 starting next week on our Facebook page. We hope you will join us! Please see the links below for more specific information related to our various programs:
In addition, we will be postponing all ACMS 20th birthday events that were scheduled for the weekend of April 24-26. We do not have future dates set yet, but now we are looking forward to those celebrations with even more anticipation. Until then the ACMS executive team will be putting our creative minds together to create a virtual celebration to share for ACMS’s 20th.
Music will help us as we move through this tricky and unprecedented time. And in the end we believe our community, in every sense of the word, will be stronger. When we reach out to one another in joy or to momentarily forget our troubles, we gain a higher understanding of perspectives and true community is born. We are grateful for your continued support and hope that you make time for music every day. It’s really a wonder what a difference it can make!
Our best to you,
Liz Cass, Rachel McInturff, Sarah Beth Gooding, Courtney Tellman
The ACMS Executive Leadership Team

Austin – Beloved arts advocate, educator, musician, and founder of the Armstrong Community Music School, Margaret Perry passed away on April 5th, 2018. It was her wish to have a memorial concert in honor of her life’s work after her passing. This concert was programmed by Ms. Perry with instructions that the event be music only – no photos and no speeches.
Every piece that will be performed was chosen by Margaret and the musicians were hand-picked as well. This will be a glorious celebration of Margaret Perry’s legacy and a celebration of all that goes into making Austin a strong and beautiful arts community.
It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our founding director, Margaret Perry, on Thursday, April 5th, 2018. Margaret stepped down as director in October of 2017 after learning of her diagnosis and dealt with her treatment and final stages with grace, honesty, humor and a depth of courage that was miraculous to witness. Her imprint will be forever on the Armstrong Community Music School, the staff that followed her vision wholeheartedly and the faculty that shared her mission of service and excellence. Her wisdom guided many. Her laughter uplifted all. She will be deeply missed.
A memorial concert is being planned in her honor, hosted by ACMS staff and joined together with many of the Austin arts organizations with whom she served and collaborated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Armstrong Community Music School or the Margaret Perry Endowment Fund at the Austin Community Foundation.
We offer Intro to Piano for Adults several times a year. Check with the Registrar about our schedule!
